Modesty vs. Marketing: Online Networking Tips for Women

As women, we are taught from an early age to be modest. We are expected to downplay and not “brag” about ourselves or our accomplishments too much. We are told people will find it somehow offensive or distasteful. So, we learn to clam up.

As adult women running businesses, we tend to carry those beliefs forward into our professional lives.

Sadly, when our time comes to shine, we shy away from opportunities to take the spotlight, even though stepping into it would help our businesses grow.

“What will people think of me? I don’t want to be obnoxious…”

There’s a lot of talk these days about the fear of putting ourselves “out there” and how it’s related to Impostor Syndrome. And in many cases it most certainly is. But our deeply-ingrained modesty factor is often a big part of that, too.

This mindset in business sets us up for self sabotage. How do we market if we refuse to let our passion show? How do we share the benefits of our offers if we’re worried about being annoying?

I’m not talking about spam, here. That’s a whole other post for another day.

I’m talking about taking opportunities that are given to us and making the most of them. I’m talking about being proud of what we have to offer and excited to share it with people who are asking us to. I’m talking about dropping that modesty stuff in exchange for more sales because we firmly believe in our business and know other people will too when they see that.

Proud of your biz? Shout it from the rooftops, baby!

I’m talking about CONFIDENCE.

It is 100%, perfectly, totally, sincerely OK to not only HAVE but also to outwardly and unapologetically SHOW confidence in our biz. It doesn’t have to be over-the-top obnoxious or even the slightest bit salesy. If you truly love what you do, it will show as genuine all the way.

That is a big part of networking and of marketing, whether in person or online. That passion and that confidence are magnetic and attractive to prospects, and inspiring when a woman is shining her unique and glorious light for all to see.

There is a time and a place for modesty, but marketing time is not it. You work hard to be proud of your biz, and that is an accomplishment in itself, which should never be downplayed.

Thank you for visiting Strong and Worthy! My name is Sara Hodge and I am founder of the site. I am, and have always been, a firm believer and passionate supporter of all things self care, and hope to continue my work in extending that message to my fellow career women. I don't believe there can be true success in work without first achieving healthy personal growth, and my mission with Strong and Worthy is to inspire and motivate working women to fortify their confidence and resilience from the inside, in order to let it shine even brighter on the outside. In addition to strongandworthy.com I also founded my original site, www.Mumsnchums.com in 2009. Mums 'n Chums is a parenting community that serves the Greater Toronto Area and has, in many ways, been the catalyst for the majority of the projects I have worked on over the past 7 years. Those projects have included large scale events, social media consulting and management for brands, Twitter party hosting, networking group leadership (I currently run 3 large groups), charity events, speaking engagements, and of course writing. I'm so glad you're here and would love to know your thoughts on this site as I continue to grow it into what I have envisioned it to be. Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated and will be taken into consideration. Thanks again for stopping in!
